Revisited: Destination, Determination, and Deliberation

The thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve.

In J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth year students receive their first lessons in Apparition. Their professor tells them it’s important to fix their minds on the destination, focus all of their determination, and move with deliberation. Though I’ve never received a letter to Hogwarts (to my unending disappointment), I think these ideas for achieving Apparition are useful in another way. What way is that? In writing of course!!!

Unless writing is a hobby, all writers have a similar destination: publication! But there are many little destinations to journey towards in order to get the ultimate goal. Perhaps you merely want a full hour of uninterrupted writing time each day. Or you want a bigger desk and a more comfortable chair. Maybe there’s a specific magazine you want to publish your work. Your destination could be to finish your novel’s first draft before summer. Perhaps you’re already published and your next destination is to finish the next novel by the deadline you’ve promised your publisher.

Wherever you are in the writing journey, fix your mind firmly on your destination. Now focus all of your determination on your desired goal. Imagine yourself achieving it. See it clearly in your mind. See it and believe it. Now do it. Be deliberate. You know what you have to do to achieve what you want. See, believe, do, achieve.

Fix your mind on your destination. Focus all of your determination on your goal. Move with deliberation and go get it! Anything is possible if you’ve got enough nerve!!

What is the destination you are determined to deliberately achieve in the new year?

Happy New Year, Zigzaggers! May you achieve everything you’re wishing for and working for in 2013!!!

What a wonderful and inspiring post! Perfect for me right now, as I organize my next step on my own writer's journey. Happy New Year!

A timely reminder of some excellent advice!

I've been having small panic attacks (ok, sometimes big ones) over whether I can write two sequels that are as good as their predecessor. I know a wrote a great book. But can I pull off a whole series!

Destination -- yes, I know where I want to take my characters. Determination -- I have that, and so do they.
Deliberation -- This is the part I need to work on. I need to to take my time, think things through, take breaks when I need inspiration, and remember I can do multiple drafts to get each one exactly right.

Thanks, Laura. Deep breath.

Set your goals and act upon them!

I think often people set wishes. If it's not a real goal, a burning desire, a person won't do what it takes to make it happen.

I hear an 11 year old wizard is equivalent to a 33 year old in the muggle world...so I'm betting you'll get your letter then. That's what I keep telling myself to get through the day.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement. I have an overall goal, but need to break it down in stages.

Dianne- You can and you will! Happy New Year!!

Diane- So true. Wishes are great, but that's all they remain if you don't make a plan to attain them and act upon it.

Stella- I love it! I feel so much better now!! :)

Joy- You're welcome! Good luck and happy new year!!
