How Real Books Made Me Fall in Love with My Husband All Over Again

WeHeartIt.com

I wouldn’t call my husband a reader, but I also wouldn’t call him not a reader. He was much more into reading when he was a kid, but it seems like high school turns some kids against reading. What is that all about?

So he does read, but only when I beg and beg and beg him to read a particular book. He gives in to shut me up! And then he really enjoys the book. The next time I want him to read a certain book, it happens all over again: me begging him to read a book I know he’ll like, he ignoring the pleads, me being extra annoying, he finally picking up the book and then liking it. Go figure.

Last fall, we got the first season of Game of Thrones from Netflix, and we really enjoyed it. Hubs kept asking me what happens next (I had read only the first two books at the time) but I said, “I’m not telliiiiing. You’ll just have to read the books!” So for Christmas I got him the box set of the first four books. He laughed when he opened it, but he is reading them!

One night we were both reading and a sudden thought popped into my head: Should I have gotten my husband an e-reader? Would he embrace reading even more with a cool electronic device? My husband is a stereotypical man in that he gets giddy over anything electronic. I guess I hadn’t ever thought of giving him an e-reader because I have no interest in it.

So I said to him, “It’s a little late for this, but should I have gotten you a Kindle for reading instead of the books??”

Without even taking his eyes away from the book in his hands, he said, “No way. If I’m going to read, I want an actual book. Not something electronic.”

This! From the guy who oohs-and-ahhs over the latest and greatest electronic thingamajigs! I can only imagine what I must’ve looked like, but I’m pretty sure there were a dozen red and pink hearts hovering around my beaming face.

Hubs and I may be different when it comes to our views on reading, but we both prefer real books, ink and paper books. I fell in love with him all over again!

I'm with you two. I've never read an e-book. I love the feel, the cover art, and even the smell of a real book.

That is so sweet. :)

And I used to feel the same way about physical books. And I still do. But then I'll get a book that the print is too small or the book hard to hold...and I'm glad I have amy ereader. I read both 50/50.

One day I will convince my wife to read novels. She's spent too much time reading textbooks that I fear 'reading' is too closely associated with 'work' for it to be enjoyable. I'm with you guys, though, about printed books. There's just nothing like 'em. I do read eBooks from time to time. eBooks are great, but print books aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

That's sweet! My husband is so anti-print book now that he has a tablet. I'll take either though.

Such a cute post! I read GOT before my hubby too, and it took him the HBO show to reel him in.

Has yours read Hugh Howey's Wool Omnibus?

Cute post Laura. I prefer not to read Ebooks, like the feel of real books in my hands.

Nothing makes me swoon, but a good book can have me bawling like a baby.

My hubby is the same, but he rarely reads anything and certainly not spec fic.

Returning your visit. Did you see the AtoZ blog about making a hyperlink. Very useful.
